Stacey Mathews grew up in Colorado where she attended the University of Northern Colorado and graduated with Honors. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in English and obtained her teaching certification with an emphasis in Special Education. After graduation, Stacey moved to Texas where she has resided with her husband Troy and son Dustin for over 20 years. Upon moving to Texas, she was an English and Social Studies teacher for eight years, as well as an adjunct professor for the University of St. Thomas.
Next, Stacey decided to return to the classroom as a student to pursue a law degree at the University of Houston Law Center, in part because of her ongoing desire to help children. While in law school, she interned in the Child Abuse Division of the District Attorney’s Office and served as an ad litem attorney for abused and neglected children. After graduation, Stacey was awarded a two-year fellowship dedicated to the representation of children with special needs in both the school and juvenile justice systems. She then served as an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County.
In recent years, Stacey continued her work here in Williamson County serving as the chief prosecutor of the 277th District Court. In 2012, she was Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction held by fewer than 2% of all Texas attorneys. And in October of 2013, Governor Rick Perry appointed her as the new judge of the 277th District Court. She serves as the Presiding Judge of the 277th District Court and oversees a felony criminal docket. She is also the Juvenile Judge for Williamson County, handling all juvenile justice cases of children between the ages of 10 and 17.
Outside of the courtroom, Stacey volunteered as a board member of the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center and provided training to law enforcement agencies. She currently serves as the Chairwoman of the Williamson County Juvenile Board. She also enjoys spending time with her loving family – especially her 1 year-old granddaughter! Stacey is married to Troy Mathews, a hotel general manager and her biggest supporter. She and her family attend Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
